I competed in Gamestation’s “Smash bros showdown” this time last week, hoping to win myself a beasting new TV. In the week leading up to the tourney, i trained myself hard on four-way brawls and told very few people about the competition, hoping to increase the chances of a Nen victory. The logic was that as I’d had the game on import for months, surely I’d waste most of the competition?? Nah. Nae joy. Here’s how it went down:
Round 1: Me (the pokemon trainer) versus 2 others. I forget who, maybe a Fox player and a lucas player? Either way, i BEAST IT UP. All cylinders firing, i pull off such a decisive win I’m taunting excessively in-game and doing Tobey Maguire “WHOOP”s. I feel amazing.
Round 2: 1 on 1 against the wee guy i’d been chatting to in the crowd for the duration. We are very good sports about it, but needless to say it’s another win for the pokemon trainer. Highlight: Bowser’s “Stomp” (down and b i think) being foiled at the last moment by ivysaur’s “flower explosion” up- smash. Glorious.
Round 3: it all goes pear shaped for me as the competition level is upped in the semi final. Clearly these are good gameplayers- Link, Luigi and Sheik are all devastating in the right hands. With my squirtle commiting squirtle-cide early on (“oh…SQUIRTLE!” i shout angrily), my confidence was shot. Not my round. Happens to everybody i think, especially in the quasi-luck dependent 4 way brawls. Luigi pulls off a stunning win, i shake his hand and move on back to my life.
But it stings still, this defeat, despite me having performed really well (one more win wouldve seen me winning a prize). I think i’m just a bad loser, as the disappointment has followed me round all week. Ahh well, i can go back to playing it properly now. Stock battles, stage selection and items on make for a far more pleasant way to play. Good old Smash.
